Het Amerika van Barham wordt bevolkt door dolende zielen. De songschrijver hoeft maar naar zichzelf te kijken voor inspiratie. Hij is een gebroken man. Geen wonder dat zijn moeder zich zorgen over hem maakt. Ze ziet in haar zoon vooral haar broer en die werd maar 45 (<em>Family Problems<\/em>). \u2018There\u2019s a southern sadness that won\u2019t let go of this heart of mine\u2019, horen we op <em>Southern Sadness<\/em>. Op <em>Man I\u2019m Supposed To Be<\/em> beseft Barham dat zijn lot bezegeld is. \u2018I guess I\u2019m a singer, struggling to stay on key \/ That\u2019s the man I\u2019m supposed to be \/ Never first, never last, just somewhere in between \/ That\u2019s the man I\u2019m supposed to be\u2019. In <em>Wichita Falls<\/em> stuurt hij een kaartje naar zijn ex. Op <em>Old North State<\/em> is hij op de terugweg naar huis. \u2018I ain\u2019t seen my bed in months but there\u2019s a girl who keeps it warm \/ As she cries herself to sleep while I\u2019m here on the road \/ Blue Ribbon-cans and one night stands in parked cars \/ with girls that know all the words\u2019. Barham is de chroniqueur van de wereld van de rockartiest die reist van divebars naar dancehalls. Daarmee behoort American Aquarium mooi wel tot de eredivisie van de altcountry, een opmerking die we hier al eens eerder hebben gemaakt. In november zijn we weer in Nederland.
