Onder de nieuwe naam Unicorn brengt het kwartet in 1971 het debuut Uphill All The Way uit, een album met overwegend typisch Britse folkrock. Twee jaar later krijgt Unicorn \u2013 dan helemaal op de Westcoast-toer van The Byrds, Neil Young, The Band en C,S&amp;N \u2013 van David Gilmour het aanbod om een album op te nemen, dat Blue Pine Trees is getiteld en in 1974 verschijnt. Ook het volgende album<!--more-->\u00a0\u2013 voor het progressieve Harvest-label \u2013 wordt door David Gilmour geproduceerd. Too Many Crooks uit 1976 kan worden beschouwd als Unicorns beste, want een melodieuze countryrockplaat met prachtige harmonie\u00ebn en aanstekelijke melodie\u00ebn. Voorzien van een transparante, licht-gepolijste productie en een Eagles-achtige sound springen uitstekende liedjes als &#8216;Ferry Boat&#8217;, &#8216;He&#8217;s Got Pride&#8217; en &#8216;Bullseye Bill&#8217; eruit, al zijn het weemoedige titelnummer \u2013 met op pedal steel David Gilmour \u2013 en het voortreffelijke &#8216;No Way Out Of Here&#8217; de ware hoogtepunten van dit sterke Britse countryrock-album, al is deze typering eind jaren zeventig een waar anachronisme.
