Als helft van het duo Hall &amp; Oates was hij bijzonder succesvol in de jaren 70 en 80. Van het duo verschenen sindsdien vooral heel veel compilaties. Van de donkerharige met de snor verschijnt nu <strong>Arkansas<\/strong> (PS Records\/Thirty Tigers\/Bertus) en dat is wel wat anders dan de tamelijk gelikte pop die we van hem kennen met Daryl Hall. Het album van John Oates with the Good Road Band ontstond in eerste instantie als een tribute aan Mississippi John <!--more-->Hurt, van wiens hand twee nummers zijn. Verder staan er vooral bewerkte traditionals op en twee door Oates geschreven nummers. Oates pakt een beetje de sfeer van Ry Cooder op opener <em>Anytime<\/em> en het door Hurt geschreven <em>My Creole Bell<\/em>e, dat ook op <em>Into The Purple Valley<\/em> had kunnen staan. <em>Pallet Soft And Low<\/em> is dan met elektrische gitaar meer in een soulstijl als <em>Bop Till You Drop<\/em>. Het door Oates zelf geschreven titelnummer is een fraaie countryrocksong die heel goed tot stand had kunnen komen in de schuur van Levon Helm. Op het van een steelgitaar voorziene <em>Miss The Mississippi And You<\/em> zingt Oates met een soulstem alsof hij Aaron Neville naar de kroon wil steken.
