\"\"Eind vorig jaar waren we helemaal in de ban van Dances For The Lonely<\/a> van American Aquarium<\/a>. Wat een energie en wat een hartstocht had die plaat. Graham Parker, Bruce Springsteen, Little Steven en Marah haalden we er bij om het geluid van deze band uit Raleigh, North Carolina, te duiden. Het is dan ook een behoorlijk grote verrassing dat dit Small Town Hymns<\/strong> (Last Chance Records) een totaal ander soort album is. Veel rustiger. Niet een plaat om bij door het huis te springen, maar wel een cd die diep in je bewustzijn doordringt. BJ Barham (zang, akoestische gitaar) schrijft sublieme nummers die je niet loslaten. Dolende zielen bevolken zijn teksten, gevaarlijke vrouwen natuurlijk en Barham spaart ook zichzelf niet. En vanzelfsprekend die ongelooflijke aantrekkingskracht van het leven zelf en de wegen die lonken: She had on her momma\u2019s dress, it was quilted white and freshly pressed, she looked like the Queen of Appalachia. We threw everything we had in the back of my daddy\u2019\u2019s Cadillac. We dared the whole world to catch us. We got a full tank of gas, a bottle of booze, a pocket full of cash and nothing to lose… We\u2019re heading out anywhere, but here, everything we know is in the rearview mirror. The wind it sets her hair to dancing, occasionally giving glances of her face, all freckles and sunburn. With a smile you won\u2019t soon forget to the way she lights her cigarette, she\u2019s a modern day Audrey Hepburn. She\u2019s got her daddy\u2019s temper, her momma\u2019s eyes, the world ahead of us and her by my side<\/em> (Nothing To Lose). De fraaie zinnen op Small Town Hymns stromen als een rivier door kleine dorpen. She was born outside of Memphis, just north of Tupelo. Oh lord, she\u2019s a Mississippi queen. And just like that big river, oh boy she\u2019ll pull you under. She fights fire with gasoline. I want to make that glorious mistake. She\u2019s got the kisses of a thousand angels and the bite of a rattlesnake <\/em>(Rattlesnake). BJ Barham stuurt American Aquarium naar de eredivisie van de altcountry, waartoe ook Richmond Fontaine behoort. Naast Barham bestaat de band uit Zack Brown (piano, Wurlitzer), Bill Corbin (bas) Kevin McClain (drums), Ryan Johnson (elektrische gitaar, banjo), Jay Shirley (Hammond B3) en Whit Wright (pedal steel).
