Niets nieuws, maar wel verdomde goed.&#8221; Dat schreef Martijn Stoffer in 1979 in Muziekkrant Oor over Keeper Of The Flame van <a href=\"http:\/\/www.delbert.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Delbert McClinton<\/a>. Woorden die aankwamen bij een zeventienjarige. Op dat moment was ik al volwassen door de muziek, net zoals ik nu om precies dezelfde reden nog altijd niet volwassen ben. Maar dit terzijde. In 1979 kwamen mijn grootste helden uit Texas: Joe Ely en Doug Sahm. En Delbert McClinton paste <!--more-->daar helemaal bij. Want, om Martijn Stoffer nogmaals te citeren, Delbert McClinton was &#8220;van een geruststellende echtheid, schoonheid en gewoonheid&#8221;. Dertig jaar later kan van <strong>Acquired Taste<\/strong> (New West\/Sonic Rendezvous) gerust hetzelfde gezegd worden. En dan te bedenken dat McClinton in 1979 al zo\u2019n twintig jaar actief was. Delbert McClinton is zo Texaans als een plakkerige toog. Zijn funky honky tonk bestaat uit country, soul en blues, maar op zijn best nooit al te gedefinieerd. McClinton is een Victim Of Life\u2019s Circumstances, die godsallemachtig mooi kan zingen over de liefde. Zoals in Wouldn\u2019t You Think (Should\u2019ve Been Here By Now): <em>Sitting in our favorite restaurant \/ trying not to watch the clock \/ Any minute now she\u2019s gonna walk right in \/ She said she had somebody\u2019s heart to break \/ And I promised her that I would wait right here \/ Tonight\u2019s the night we\u2019ve been waiting for \/ We\u2019ve got it all planned out \/ Wouldn\u2019t you think she would\u2019ve been here by now<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Doorgerookte volwassen mannen-rock.
