In 1970 en 1971 waren er twee elpees van hem verschenen, daarna leek zijn rol uitgespeeld. <strong>Countless Branches<\/strong> (Dead Oceans\/Konkurrent) is zijn derde sinds zijn comeback. Niet dikwijls lukt het artiesten om na zo\u2019n lange tijd terug te komen en daarbij niets aan eigenheid te verliezen. Vaak is er in dit soort gevallen toch sprake van een herhalingsoefening die het niet haalt bij het eerste werk. Fay is al die jaren doorgegaan met waar hij destijds mee bezig was: liedjes maken waarin <!--more-->de menselijke maat voorop staat. De zang en het pianospel van Fay behoeven nauwelijks toevoegingen van andere instrumenten. Het gebeurt slechts spaarzaam. Sober en breekbaar is zijn muziek. Het is een keuze waarmee de Brit juist kracht uitstraalt. Het is spiritueel, maar met beide voeten aan de grond.
