Vorige week kwam het bericht dat hij met ernstige longklachten, veroorzaakt door het coronavirus, was opgenomen op de intensive care- afdeling van een ziekenhuis in Tennessee. Vannacht heeft zijn familie bevestigd dat hij is gestorven.<br \/>\nHiermee is aan het eind gekomen aan het leven van een van de grootste songschrijvers uit de folk- en countrywereld.<\/p>\n<p>Prine nam in 1970, toen nog postbode, deel aan een open mike-avond in een club in Chicago. Een toevallig\u00a0binnengelopen filmjournalist schreef <!--more-->daarna een stuk over hem. Het was Kris Kristofferson die er vervolgens voor zorgde dat hij een contract kreeg bij Atlantic Records. In 1971 verscheen zijn eerste ongetitelde plaat waarop tal van klassiekers staan zoals <em>Spanish Pipedream<\/em>,<em> Sam Stone<\/em>,<em> Paradise<\/em> en natuurlijk <em>Angel From Montgomery<\/em>. Er zouden nog 18 mooie studio-albums volgen; de laatste, The Tree Of Forgiveness, in 2017. Het laatste nummer van dat album heet <em>When I Get To Heaven<\/em>. Het is een droogkomische vertelling van alle dingen die hij in de hemel zou doen:<\/p>\n<p><em>Yeah when I get to heaven, I&#8217;m gonna take that wristwatch off my arm<\/em><br \/>\n<em>What are you gonna do with time after you&#8217;ve bought the farm?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And them I&#8217;m gonna go find my mom and dad, and good old brother Doug<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Well I bet him and cousin Jackie are still cuttin&#8217; up a rug<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I wanna see all my mama&#8217;s sisters, &#8216;cause that&#8217;s where all the love starts<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I miss &#8216;em all like crazy, bless their little hearts<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And I always will remember these words my daddy said<\/em><br \/>\n<em>He said, &#8220;Buddy, when you&#8217;re dead, you&#8217;re a dead pecker-head&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I hope to prove him wrong, that is, when I get to heaven<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8216;Cause I&#8217;m gonna have a cocktail: vodka and ginger ale<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yeah I&#8217;m gonna smoke a cigarette that&#8217;s nine miles long<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I&#8217;m gonna kiss that pretty girl on the tilt-a-whirl<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yeah this old man is goin&#8217; to town<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yeah this old man is goin&#8217; to town.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>John Prine is 73 jaar oud geworden.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"470\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JKPDFQRmG_M\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>John Prine is overleden.
