Die bandnaam is een knikje naar <em>Dust Bowl Ballads<\/em> van Woody Guthrie. Phillips Saylor Wisor is de drijvende kracht achter dit project. Hij speelt banjo in King Wilkie en is tevens lid van het old-time duo The Shiftless Rounders. Maar als Stripmall Ballads zoekt hij meer de alternatieve kant van country op. Die weifelende zangstem, onvast ook, is beslist iets dat veel altcountry typeert. Op <em>Valerie<\/em> zingt hij als Neil Young op <em>After The Gold Rush<\/em> of Elliott Smith op zijn titelloze tweede album. Breekbaar. In <!--more-->de lofi-benadering van Stripmall Ballads schuilt wel een gevaar. Het roept de vraag op of het werkelijk kwetsbaar is, of toch ook wat gekunsteld. Hoe dan ook, de losse setting van een nummer als <em>Pull Over Johnny<\/em> doet sterk denken aan de band Granfaloon Bus en dat is beslist een aangename associatie. Het ruim zeven minuten lange <em>Jennifer Pine Tree<\/em> sleept zich teveel voort.
