Dat nummer <em>Here I Come<\/em> op <a href=\"http:\/\/www.altcountry.nl\/blog\/2017\/09\/john-baumann\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Proving Grounds<\/em><\/a> was een aardige opmaat naar het samenwerkingsverband <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepanhandlers.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Panhandlers<\/a>. Kijk eens naar die hoes van <strong>The Panhandlers<\/strong> (The Next Waltz), dat is een regelrecht eerbetoon aan <em>More A Legend Than A Band<\/em> van The Flatlanders. Er waren namelijk meer musici die wilden zijn als Gilmore, Hancock of Joe. De collega\u2019s William Clark Green, Cleto Cordero en Josh Abbott waren al net zo enthousiast over dat idee als Baumann. Dus <!--more-->leven de heren zich uit door zich op de vlakte te houden: &#8216;Way out west, we got the oil and wind \/ One can pump, one you can spin \/ Both make money, bothmake sense \/ Some folks love it, some take offense \/ I got no issue \u2018cause I\u2019m in between \/ This Flatland life &amp; south plains dream\u2019 (<em>This Flatland Life<\/em>). Tien liedjes over West Texas. \u2018This is my life and these are my friends \/ We\u2019re a rowdy group of dreamers, drinkers and has-beens \/ Playing music that we love, tossing caution to the wind \/ Yeah, this is my life and these are my friends\u2019, leggen ze uit op het bonkende <em>This Is My Life<\/em>. Het nummer <em>Panhandle Slim<\/em> pakt de cadans van <em>Mr. Bojangles<\/em> van Jerry Jeff Walker. <em>The Panhandler<\/em> heeft ook een fijne melodie en een mooi <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-27223\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.altcountry.nl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/flatlanders-more-a-legend-200x200.jpg?resize=125%2C125\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.altcountry.nl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/flatlanders-more-a-legend.jpg?resize=200%2C200&amp;ssl=1 200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.altcountry.nl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/flatlanders-more-a-legend.jpg?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.altcountry.nl\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/flatlanders-more-a-legend.jpg?w=224&amp;ssl=1 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 125px) 100vw, 125px\" \/>instrumentaal intermezzo met twangende gitaar, banjo, mandoline en steelgitaar. \u2018I\u2019m drifting like a tumbleweed across this lonesome land\u2019, klinkt het op <em>Lonesome Heart<\/em>, terwijl een orgel uit een van de vele kerkjes in dit desolate landschap aan ze trekt. Ze missen de mysterieuze magie van de aartsvaders van de altcountry, maar ook zonder die unieke aantrekkingskracht is The Panhandlers een alleraardigst alternatief. Baumann komt op het van piano voorziene slotnummer <em>Caprockin\u2019<\/em> trouwens aardig in de buurt van John Fullbright.
