De Texaan is op dit moment bezig aan een korte tournee door Nederland. Alle aanleiding om alsnog <strong>Best Beasts<\/strong> (Continental Song City) te bespreken. Want als een album uit 2020 nu al niet meer de moeite waard zou zijn, dan zouden we net zo goed kunnen ophouden met het bespreken van muziek. Harlan is een verhalenverteller. Zijn zinnen hebben zin. Hij ziet dingen die anderen ontgaan. Zoals in <em>What We Saw<\/em>: \u2018And we take from sickest ones \/ Steal from the poor \/ If it can\u2019t fix itself, that\u2019s a problem ignored: \/ Living high <!--more-->on the gun \/ And getting low on the floor.\u2019 Het bestaan is een overlevingsstrijd. \u2018Struggling to breathe \/ With your back to the wall \u2026\u2019 <em>Catching On<\/em> begint spannend als iets van Robert Ellis en <em>Gemini Blues<\/em> is funky als Delbert McClinton. Het van steelgitaar voorziene <em>K&amp;W<\/em> is een duet met Kelly Mickwee. Op andere nummers horen we BettySoo en Libby Koch. De lijst van begeleiders is lang, liefst 27 namen telt die. Daardoor is er voldoende afwisseling op deze fraaie door Rich Brotherton geproduceerde plaat. Op <em>Low Pressure<\/em> loopt het water door de straten. Regenval als in het Oude Testament. <em>Somebody Else<\/em> is een pianoliedje waarop Harlan als een Californische singer-songwriter klinkt. Op <em>Gravity<\/em> valt te denken aan Jeffrey Foucault en op het titelnummer aan James McMurtry. Voldoende reden om weer eens een concert te bezoeken dus. En voor wie toch liever nog niet de drukte opzoekt is er in ieder geval dit album.
