Sinds de pandemie werkt hij op een ranch in zijn thuisstaat Californi\u00eb. Dit is zijn tweede soloplaat en die verschijnt net als het debuut op het label van The Allah-Las. De titel <strong>Giant<\/strong> (Calico Discos) is een verwijzing naar de film met James Dean. Het is een album van een wat dromerige jongeman, die echter heel goed lijkt te weten wat hij wil. Hill kiest de vrijheid om ook twee stukjes Bach te spelen. <em>French Sweet<\/em> doet hij op een kerkorgel en de manier waarop het is opgenomen doet alles in de oren <!--more-->trillen. <em>French Sweet Part Two<\/em> bestaat uit pianospel. Het album begin met een positief kampvuurliedje met prominente rollen voor banjo en viool getiteld <em>The Clock\u2019s Never Wrong<\/em>. Op het daaropvolgende <em>Calico<\/em> zijn mondharmonica en steelgitaar leidend, terwijl bas en drums een cadans aanbrengen die helemaal zou passen op <em>Harvest<\/em> van Neil Young. <em>Dead Man<\/em> heeft beslist iets van Gram Parsons, maar het is moeilijk om te bepalen wat nou precies. Het is niet de zang, want dat heeft eerder wat van Lloyd Cole. Is het die baslijn in combinatie met de steel? Dan is het eerder Flying Burrito Brothers. Iets van <em>Gilded Palace Of Sin<\/em>. <em>Candlestick<\/em> is met die mondharmonica weer wat meer als Neil Young. Het lijkt wel een jazzgitaar als <em>Good As Gone<\/em> begint, een liedje dat psychedelisch zonnig is als het werk van Beachwood Sparks. Een bijzonder werkstuk is het zeker, ook al vraag je je wel af of een slaperig liedje als <em>The Irish Sea<\/em> blijft hangen. In het persschrijven staan twee covers vermeld die echter niet op de cd staan. Het Spaans gezongen <em>Canci\u00f3n Mixteca<\/em> van Jos\u00e9 L\u00f3pez Alavez deed Ry Cooder voor de soundtrack van <em>Paris, Texas<\/em>. Op Bandcamp kun je vaststellen dat die toevoeging op cd ook de moeite waard was geweest.
