Niet dat het slecht is, in de zin van vals of zo, dat niet, maar er is gewoon geen enkel nummer dat kan bekoren. Echt geen enkel nummer! Dat Russell hier afstand heeft genomen van de countryfolk is een gegeven, maar dat hoeft op zich een positieve waardering niet in de weg te staan. Het is alleen dat de organische, soms jazzy, soul die we hier horen gewoon weinig indruk maakt. Vaak wordt er gekozen voor liedjes waarop de nadruk is<!--more--> komen te liggen op het ritme en op herhalende manier van zingen. De melodie is wat ondergeschikt gemaakt. \u201cMy goal with The Returner \u2013 sonically, poetically, and spiritually \u2013 is a radical reclamation of the present tense, a real time union of body, mind, and soul. This album is a much deeper articulation of rhythm, groove, and syncopation. Groove as it heralds the self back into the body, groove as it celebrates sensual and sexual agency and flowering, groove as an urgent call to action and political activism.\u201d Dat is niet echt gelukt wat mij betreft. <em>Stay Right Here<\/em> spreekt nog het meest aan, omdat het op een of andere manier herinnert aan Irene Cara, en het gitaarsolootje is leuk. Ook het hieronder weergegeven, aanvankelijk ingetogen, Snakelife heeft zijn charmes.
