Hij is (in 1992) geboren als William Lee Apostol. Zijn beetje lullige artiestennaam werd bedacht door zijn tante, vanwege zijn veelzijdige behendigheid met alle denkbare soorten bluegrasssnaren. In 2012 deed hij de wereld versteld staan met een thuis opgenomen <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/VFEZOjtrwls\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">video <\/a>waarop hij zijn eigen compositie <em>Dust In A Baggie<\/em> ten beste geeft. Dat nummer is ook de openingstrack op <strong>Billy Strings Live Vol. 1<\/strong> (Warner Records). Er wordt wel eens beweerd dat bluegrass eigenlijk keiharde akoestische rock\u2019n\u2019roll is. Strings rekt het genre nog wat verder op en duikt in sommige nummers diep de jazz <!--more-->in. In <em>Ruben\u2019s Train<\/em> (nota bene een liedje van rond 1800) en <em>Highway Hypnosis <\/em>bijvoorbeeld improviseren Strings en zijn vaste begeleiders (Billy Failing banjo, Royal Masat bas, Jarrod Walker mandoline, and Alex Hargreaves fiddle) er flink en langdurig op los. Op die manier beslaan de tien tracks op dit livealbum bij elkaar maar liefst ruim anderhalf uur.
