Was <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altcountry.nl\/blog\/2023\/08\/todd-partridge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autumn Never Knows<\/a><\/em> uit 2023 nog een vriendelijk rootsalbum met melodieuze uitstapjes naar folk en country, <strong>Desert Fox Blues <\/strong>(eigen beheer) is zo duister als het grimmigste werk van T-Model Ford, R.L. Burnside en Jon Spencer. Niks mis mee natuurlijk. Integendeel. Vanaf seconde 1 gaan Partridge en zijn mannen er in <em>Depression <\/em>tegenaan met de snerpende slidegitaar van Kent Burnside (kleinzoon van, daar heb je het al) en de Paul Butterfield-mondharmonica van Tom Albanese, waarna Partridge zelf uitlegt wat er aan de hand is, namelijk drukte om niks \u2013 waarschijnlijk: \u201cWhen all you <!--more-->do is worry, fuss and fret \/ About trouble that ain\u2019t even got here yet \/ It\u2019s all just tomorrows you may never know\u201d. Ook <em>Gotta Do<\/em> begint met die honkende harmonica. Deze keer stuitert Partridge binnen met de van Jon Spencer geleende megafoonstem om de blues uit te leggen: \u201cMuddy Waters sittin&#8217; in a tree \/ he said the blues don\u2019t set you free \/ but they can help you break the shackles around your feet\u201d. In <em>Interstellar Planetary<\/em> zoekt hij in JJ Cale-stijl bij astronomen en sciencefictionschrijver naar verklaringen voor de radiostilte in het universum. <em>Going Home Empty <\/em>duikt met de zuigende mondharmonica van Albanese diep in de Chicago-blues, met alles wat daarbij hoort: \u201cI ain\u2019t lookin\u2019 for trouble, trouble always finds me \/ I got here full but I&#8217;m going home empty\u201d. De bluesballad <em>Jimmy Carter<\/em> is een mooi, stampend eerbetoon aan de oud-president die maar niet van doodgaan weet: \u201cHe said I will not go \/ Said I will not go gently into the good good night\u201d (inderdaad: \u201cDylan Thomas wrote the president\u2019s favorite poem\u201d). In <em>After The Work Is Done<\/em> grijpt Partridge uiteindelijk weer een beetje terug op de meer gangbare americana \u2013 op zich prima, maar doe toch maar liever de roestige, bonkende blues van de negen tracks daarv\u00f3\u00f3r.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Depression\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/acGcCTvHHUM\" width=\"440\" height=\"247\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wat Todd Partridge het afgelopen jaar is overkomen, weten we niet.
