We noemen het maar hobbelige <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW213005876 BCX8\">southern<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW213005876 BCX8\"> countryrock, gez<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW213005876 BCX8\">ongen met een stem die ergens doet denken aan <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW213005876 BCX8\">die van Richard <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW213005876 BCX8\">Buckner<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW213005876 BCX8\">. Gruizige gitaren, piano, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW213005876 BCX8\">pedal<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW213005876 BCX8\"> steel (o.m. door John James Tourville van The Deslondes) en <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW213005876 BCX8\">fiddle<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW213005876 BCX8\"> bepalen het geluid. De gelijkenis met MJ <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW213005876 BCX8\">Lenderman<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW213005876 BCX8\"> is <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW213005876 BCX8\">niet<!--more--> toevallig: <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW213005876 BCX8\">net als diens <em>Manning <\/em><\/span><em><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW213005876 BCX8\">Fireworks<\/span><\/em><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW213005876 BCX8\"> werd <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW213005876 BCX8\">ook deze plaat geproduceerd door Alex <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW213005876 BCX8\">Farrar<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW213005876 BCX8\"> (en opgenomen in diens <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW213005876 BCX8\">Drop Of Sun-studio).\u00a0 <\/span>Krakende rockers en rustige liedjes; <em>Big Ugly<\/em> heeft het beide. Nummers waarin Dowdy het leven in Appalachia beschrijft, gevangen in dromerige beelden. Niet altijd mooi, nee, lelijk soms. Neergehaalde ziekenhuizen, niet op willen staan omdat de pijn dan ook opstaat. Maar ook die dorpswinkel, die altijd maar doorgaat. Wat ook opvalt is hoe prachtig Dowdy kan zingen, met een bijzondere timing. Op <em>What&#8217;s His Name<\/em> wordt hij, in vocale zin, ondersteund door Merce Lemon, ook zo&#8217;n persoonlijke favoriet.
