Isbells debuut in 2007 stelde mij behoorlijk teleur, al revancheerde hij zich daarna met het sterke groepsalbum Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit. Op Here We Rest trekt Isbell de opgaande lijn door, want soulvol, warmbloedig en grofkorrelig tegelijk. Als veelbelovende gitarist en songschrijver werd Jason \u2013 tevens toentertijd het liefje van Shonna Tucker \u2013 Drive-By Truckers binnengehaald. Hoewel een zinvolle toevoeging, <!--more-->drie albums later stond Isbell weer buiten. Inmiddels is Isbell beter gaan zingen en heeft hij zijn stiel gevonden in soulvolle countryrock, of rockende countrysoul. Afkomstig uit Greenhill, Alabama moet Jason Isbell welhaast de straling van het nabije Muscle Shoals gevoeld hebben, want Here We Rest is vooral volbloed countrysoul. Tussen zwabberend en walsend, tussen gevoelig melancholiek en potent countryrockend, daar ergens bevindt zich Here We Rest.
