De Texaan begint er zijn album <strong>El Cabron<\/strong> (Break Maiden Records\/Thirty Tigers) mee. Stilistisch daalt hij af naar het verleden, er zit zelfs wat jazz door zijn country. En daarmee komt hij in de buurt van Wayne Hancock, wie kent hem nog? Dat zit hem ook wel een beetje in zijn voorkomen; ietwat sullig. Net zoals die andere Texaan die toch ook al weer dertig jaar geleden debuteerde met <em>Thunderstorms And Neon Signs<\/em>. Het komt er op neer dat Johnson te hip is om cool te <!--more-->zijn. Hij komt uit de kustplaats Beaumont en dat ligt op korte afstand van Louisiana. Dat is te horen, want <em>Buy Me A Bayou<\/em> is lekker pittig dankzij kruiden die in cajun worden gebruikt. In dit geval accordeon en fiddle. <em>Waxahachie<\/em> is zo\u2019n songtitel waarbij het nauwelijks fout kan gaan. Het verhaal speelt zich af in de Texaanse plaats met die naam. Op <em>Believer<\/em> brengen blazers countrysoul. Johnson zingt als een verleider op het nummer met een lekkere gitaarsolo en dito orgelspel. Met zo\u2019n nummer is de vergelijking met Charley Crockett snel gemaakt. Net als die Texaan is deze artiest van vele markten thuis. De beste artiesten uit die staat kunnen zo lekker zwalken; van de beperkingen en strikte regels zoals de industrie in Nashville die voorschrijft moeten ze niets hebben. Het liedje <em>Thanks To The Cathouse (I\u2019m In The Doghouse With You)<\/em> van Johnny Paycheck klinkt hier als Doug Sahm in feeststemming. De pianist leeft zich uit in <em>Pipeliner Blues<\/em> van Moon Mullican en de steelgitaar maakt lekkere slippers. Het is rockabilly met een beetje western swing. <em>Last Call (With Apologies To Terry Allen)<\/em> heeft een lekker bonkend ritme. Het is honky tonk met levensechte humor. <em>El Cabron<\/em> is niets anders dan <em>Time Well Wasted<\/em>. \u2018Gonna waste some time again\u2019, zijn de afsluitende woorden van het album.
