Zijn band is namelijk gekaapt door Neil Young.<\/p>\n<p>Midden jaren zestig komt Whitsell in Los Angeles, Californi\u00eb terecht in een band die mede gevormd is door muzikanten afkomstig uit een doo-wop-groep (Danny &amp; The Memories) en een vervolgens heel voorzichtige psychedelische band (The Psyrcle): Danny Whitten (gitaar), Billy Talbot (bas) en Ralph Molina (drums). The Rockets dus, met daaraan toegevoegd violist Bobby Notkoff, en ze spelen net als <!--more-->LA-bands The Byrds, Hearts &amp; Flowers, The Leaves en Love folkrock, al is karakteristiek aan The Rockets Notkoffs dreinende, alomtegenwoordige viool.<\/p>\n<p>En dat blijkt ook wel uit het in de Paramount Recording-studio, in Hollywood, opgenomen zelfgetitelde <i>The Rockets. <\/i>Want een lekker rammelende folkrockplaat met een steevast krassende viool, dat echt fijne liedjes biedt als <i>Hole In My Pocket<\/i> en <i>Won\u2019t You Say You\u2019ll Stay<\/i>. En ook <i>Mr. Chips<\/i> is gaaf, evenals folkrockers als het korte <i>It\u2019s A Mistake<\/i>, en het prachtige <i>I Won\u2019t Always Be Around. Pills Blues<\/i> is opwindend en inderdaad bluesy, en ook de wat meer uitgespreide songs als het psychedelische <i>Let Me Go<\/i> en het lekker doorgetripte en door de viool voortgejaagde <i>Stretch Your Skin<\/i> stelen de show.<\/p>\n<p>Als <i>The Rockets<\/i> in 1968 verschijnt, treedt de band op in het voorprogramma van Neil Young, die daarop Whitten, Talbot en Molina direct inlijft als zijn begeleidingsband \u2013 en ze omdoopt tot Crazy Horse.
