Zijn ouders hebben in de jaren vijftig in Chicago, Illinois een muzikale radioshow en Robb treedt daarin al op als hij vier is. Californi\u00eb is het beloofde land van de muziek- en entertainmentindustrie, zodat de familie daar naartoe verhuist. Robb, niet alleen een zanger en gitarist, maar ook met een talent als songschrijver, komt begin jaren zeventig in het Californische countrywereldje terecht, waarna het ervan komt dat hij samen met Jack Tempchin <i>Already Gone<\/i> schrijft. Tempchin, die The Eagles al eerder voorzag van <i>Peaceful Easy Feeling<\/i>, stuurt de tape op naar<!--more--> Glenn Frey en de rest is geschiedenis: <i>Already Gone<\/i> verschijnt in 1974 op het Eagles-album <i>On the Border<\/i>. Robb Strandlund hoort dan thuis in het rijtje J.D. Souther, Jackson Browne en Jack Tempchin: songleveranciers van The Eagles.<\/p>\n<p>De lijn waarlangs Strandlunds singer-songwriterscarri\u00e8re zich afspeelt vangt in 1976 aan met zijn zelfgetitelde debuutalbum dat uitkomt op Polydor. Strandlund krijgt muzikale medewerking van onder anderen een clubje strijkers, multi-instrumentalist Chris Darrow (Kaleidoscope), drummer Dallas Taylor (Clear Light, Crosby, Stills, Nash &amp; Young, Manassas) en op pedalsteel Tom Brumley, bekend van The Buckaroos van Buck Owens en The Stone Canyon Band van Rick Nelson. Het is een fijne plaat met goed in het gehoor liggende, met vaardige hand geschreven <i>humdingers <\/i>van countryrockliedjes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>De opener <i>Sweet Mama<\/i> is nog een uptempo, zij het meezingbaar, rockliedje, maar daarna wordt <i>Robb Strandlund <\/i>ingetogener, getuige diens eigen meer introspectieve versie van <i>Already Gone<\/i>, dan even een rock-opleving met <i>My Woman<\/i>, een fraaie cover van The Flying Burrito\u2019s <i>Hot Burrito #1 <\/i>en prachtige eigen composities als <i>If You Ever Go To San Diego, I Love You Good-bye, Goin\u2019 To California, All I Really Want To Do Is Go <\/i>en<i> Just Another Country Song<\/i>. Om dan af te ronden met de fantastische Jack Tempchin-cover <i>One More Song<\/i>. Al met al is <i>Robb Strandlund<\/i> gewoon een soort van Eagles-plaat, ergens tussenin <i>On the Border<\/i> en <i>One of These Nights<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Hierna richt Strandlund met Chris Darrow, inmiddels dik bevriend, Rank Strangers op die in 1977 een plaat uitbrengen en speelt hij in 1978 in<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Flying Burrito Brothers \u2013 alwaar hij ongetwijfeld live de zang van <i>Hot Burrito #1<\/i> voor zijn rekening mag nemen.<\/p>\n<p>Maar Robb Strandlund blijft een figuur in de marge, want wie is nu bekend met diens geweldige countryrockplaat? En voorts: hij speelde mee op platen van Bonny Raitt en Lacy J. Dalton en stond op het podium met The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Emmylou Harris, Ricky Skaggs, Delbert McClinton en ja, Alice Cooper. Nog steeds \u2013 en voor altijd \u2013 een figuur in de marge. Wij zetten <i>Robb Strandlund<\/i> nog eens op.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Robb Strandlund<\/i>.
