Drie jaar geleden verscheen Kathryn Legendre ook al in deze rubriek. Toen in een serie hoezen<\/a> die draaide om beelden van de depressie. Met Legendre als een Old Soul<\/em> in een jurkje met bloemendessin. Ze had daar gezelschap van onder anderen Gillian Wech, die op Revival<\/em> ook al in zo\u2019n jurkje in zwart-wit een en al soberheid uitstraalde. In deze aflevering zien we een heel andere Kathryn Legendre. De Texaanse lacht verleidelijk naar de fotograaf voor een gordijn van glitters. Op Here\u2019s Your Honky Tonk<\/em> zit ze op een barkruk terwijl de sigarettenrook in haar ogen prikt. Van haar eigen sigaret, want ja, als ze verlaten is door haar man steekt ze er toch maar weer eentje op om het verdriet te verdrijven. Terwijl ze zich zo had voorgenomen om nooit weer met roken te beginnen.<\/p>\n \u2018I rolled up to a joint downtown \/ To hear some western swing \/ Cruise around the dance floor \/ And hear twin fiddles ring\u2019, zingt Legendre op The Day I Smoked A J With Ray<\/em>. En dat gaat natuurlijk over het consumeren van een vette joint in gezelschap van Ray Benson, bandleider van het legendarische in western swing gespecialiseerde Asleep At The Wheel. Benson zingt zelf een moppie mee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Het roken leert ze niet zomaar af. En kroegen bezoeken ook niet. Daar is ze eigenlijk altijd present. Als het niet in levende lijve is, dan toch als plaatje in de jukebox, zoals ze laat weten op Back To The Barroom Again<\/em>. \u2018Now my second home is a honky tonk \/ They got my name in the ol\u2019 jukebox \/ So whenever you wanna take it for a spin \/ Lead me back to the barroom again.\u2019<\/p>\n Ook Brennen Leigh is niet weg te houden uit de kroeg. Voorlopig nog niet althans, zo verkondigt ze op het titelnummer van Ain\u2019t Through Honky Tonkin\u2019 Yet<\/em>: \u2019I\u2019ve been watchin\u2019 all my friends settlin\u2019 down \/ They no longer want to go out on the town \/ Well, I could have that kind of life, I guess \/ But I ain\u2019t through honky tonkin\u2019 yet\u2019.<\/p>\n Overigens maakte Leigh een jaar eerder het album Obsessed With The West<\/em> met Asleep At The Wheel. Met dus diezelfde Ray Benson van die joint die hij met Legendre oprookte. De honky tonk van Leigh wordt eigenlijk altijd wel opgewaardeerd met enkele streken western swing.<\/p>\n Je kunt haar er wel bij hebben in de kroeg, die Leigh. Oftewel: The Bar Should Say Thanks<\/em>. \u2018The bar should say thanks \/ For all the good times I brought with me \/ Even when my mind was a total blank \/ I was the life of the party \/ Before me, it was just a quiet place \/ A couple of guys cryin\u2019 along with Hank \/ Now it\u2019s the happenin\u2019 place to be \/ And it\u2019s all because of me \/ The bar should say thanks.\u2019<\/p>\n De uit Kansas City afkomstige Natalie Prauser maakte op haar veertiende al haar opwachting in de kroeg. Om muziek te maken welteverstaan. Haar honky tonk is een mengvorm met wat folk uit Laurel Canyon die ze brengt met de bravoure van een outlaw. En net als Legendre en Leigh is ze niet weg te slaan uit de etablissementen. En inmiddels echt niet meer alleen om er liedjes te zingen. Op het titelnummer van \u2019Til The Sun Comes Up<\/em> legt ze dat fijntjes uit: \u2018You and me together is a sure fire way to die young \/ With the bars and the pills, the weed and the thrills, it ain\u2019t right \/ but \/ It\u2019s too good to be wrong \/ When we stay up all night long \/ And talk about the love that we share \/ I got no worries, and I got no cares \/ When the whiskey\u2019s flowing \/ And the cocaine\u2019s blowing \/ A whole lotta nothing is all I\u2019m knowing \/ But I love you, I hope that\u2019s enough \/ And I\u2019ll love you \u2019til the sun comes up\u2019.<\/p>\n Moeten we Prauser nog geloven als ze een liedje de titel I Wanna Be A Housewife<\/em> geeft? Misschien wel. \u2018I wanna be a housewife to a man that\u2019s never home \/ Maybe I\u2019ll try that ol\u2019 nightlife that my man loves so \/ I\u2019ll have a drink and lose my house keys, \u2018cause I got too stoned \/ Well I wanna be a housewife but now I can\u2019t go home.\u2019<\/p>\n Tot slot van dit rondje langs de kroegen komen we Hannah Juanita tegen onder de neonverlichting.
