De snarenplukker op mandoline speelt ook choro, een instrumentaal Braziliaans genre waarin een hoog tempo en improvisatie centraal staan, en jazz. Op <strong>Where We Go<\/strong> (eigen beheer) blijft hij echter voornamelijk bij country. Van de elf composities zijn er zes van hemzelf en dat zijn allemaal instrumentale werkjes. Opener <em>Valley Springs<\/em> is een snel werkje, maar <em>Lyell Fork<\/em> daarentegen begint juist traag en wordt gekenmerkt door klotsende noten. En <em>So Close<\/em> is uitermate weemoedig. <em>The Hills Of Isle Au Haut<\/em> van <!--more-->de folklorist Gordon Bok brengt met meerstemmige zang de ouderwetse sfeer van vroege countryrock. Dat kan ook gezegd worden over <em>Anna Lee<\/em>, een nummer van Laurelyn Dossett dat ook gedaan werd door Levon Helm op <em>Dirt Farmer<\/em>. Het is ook in de uitvoering van Appelman het soort countryrock dat leunt op de tradities van bluegrass.
