In Saxophone Colossus, Aidan Levy’s biografie van Sonny Rollins (inmiddels 95), staat dat de legendarische saxofonist in 1988 in het tv-programma Night Music een optreden deelde met Leonard Cohen. Night Music was bedoeld om de grenzen tussen verschillende muziekgenres enigszins te doorbreken. Eerst deden de beide artiesten om de beurt een paar eigen nummers. Aan het eind kwamen ze samen op het podium om Cohens Who By Fire te spelen. Rollins, verscholen achter een donkere zonnebril, begon; daarna kwam Cohen met het eerste couplet. ‘It was clear that something special was happening,’ schrijft Levy. Nu weer de solo van Rollins. Cohen draaide zijn rug naar het publiek om Sonny aan het werk te zien, die hartstochtelijk tekeerging. Na de tweede keer Cohen was het aan Rollins om de zaak af te ronden. ‘Sonny began to rock. When some devout Jews pray, they sway back and forth in a hypnotic rhythm, a shuckling motion; Sonny was davening as though his life depended on it. He ended with a final peroration as the rhythm section dropped out, circular breathing to repeat an insistent motif without taking in the breath of life. He descended into the depths chromatically, then tilted the bell of his saxophone into his knee to mute it, but the breath continued.’
