Songtitels als I Don’t Want To Play Guitar Anymore en Farewell To The Good Times doen het ergste vrezen. Is Alejandro Escovedo aan het eind van zijn latijn? Is de man die moest zien te dealen met hepatitis C het overlevingsgevecht moe? Hij zingt er op heel veel nummers van Burn Something Beautiful (Fantasy Records/Bertus) over. Op de opener gaat hij Horizontal. De harde garagerock met een vlammende gitaar die over de bodem kronkelt eindigt in distortion. Is dat direct al het einde? Niets ervan. Op Heartbeat Smile springt de man die eind jaren 90 door No Depression werd uitgeroepen tot artiest van het decennium op een ‘runaway train’ en behoudt hij de juiste cadans. Escovedo zingt eigenlijk altijd al als een man die uitgeput is door een leven vol rock-’n-roll. Zijn enigszins hese, niet al te krachtige stem is een geweldig instrument voor zijn liedjes, die zich altijd net voorbij het moment van volledig overgave lijken af te spelen. Zo heeft hij al een Sunday Morning Feeling op de zaterdagavond. De piepende sax van Steve Berlin toont ons Escovedo in een Suit Of Lights, een stukje dwarse new wave op een rock-’n-roll party. De zigzaggende gitaarlijn van Redemption Blues doet denken aan Woodcocks en Sidewinders. John Moen, drummer van Decemberists, is mede verantwoordelijk voor het sinistere decor. Escovedo schreef de nummers met Peter Buck en Scott McCaughey, die vanzelfsprekend ook deel uitmaken van de band, waarin verder Kurt Bloch (leadgitaar) en zangeressen Kelly Hogan en Corin Tucker. Op het met Byrdsy gitaarspel getoonzette Johnny Volume worden herinneringen opgehaald aan de tijd dat Escovedo te vinden was op St. Mark’s Place in New York, zichzelf onderdompelend in het rockleven. Het kan toch niet waar zijn dat met deze urgente rockplaat Escovedo in rook zal opgaan? Burn Something Beautiful, maar wacht daar nog maar even mee.
