1977 is niet meer echt een goed jaar voor pubrock: te laat. En al helemaal niet als die ook nog eens geschoeid is op Amerikaanse countryrock, want diametraal ertegenover staat punk. Meal Ticket vecht met hun Britse countryrock dan ook tegen de bierkaai – al is het goed bier drinken in de pub met de vijf Londense jongens en een Canadees. Midden jaren zeventig bespeelt Meal Ticket, in het zog van bands als Brinsley Schwarz en Bees Make Honey, het Londense pubcircuit met hun aan Poco en The Eagles refererende sound.
In, tja, 1977 komt Meal Tickets debuutplaat Code of the Road uit, een waar anachronisme met zijn countryrockliedjes en teksten als You know that stretch of highway linkin’ Pueblo to Cheyenne? (OK Bar (Same Old Story)), See, I was making this quiet little run from Tampa through Nogales (Keepin the Faith) en For three months and a day or two she heard his songs for free, In one nite stands like Waco, and Nowhere, Tennessee (Georgia Syncopator). Meal Ticket maakt zich het idioom helemaal eigen – zo had het geweldige Last One To Know zomaar op een Poco-plaat kunnen staan. Code of the Road – met op de hoes een wegenkaart van de omgeving van Fort Worth/Dallas, Texas – is in 1977 zo’n beetje uit de tijd, wat dus nog meer geldt voor opvolgers Three Times A Day (1977) en Take Away (1978), maar biedt met een Britse pubrock-knipoog wel onvervalste, ouderwetse countryrock.
